Choose, apply and maintain mulch without burying stems, blocking water or importing avoidable weeds. Use this guide as a practical starting point, then adjust for your region, property and the current condition of the site.
Mulch solves several small problems at once
A suitable organic mulch can reduce surface evaporation, buffer soil temperature, suppress many weed seedlings and feed soil as it breaks down. It also creates visual continuity across mixed garden beds.
Mulch is not a cure for perennial weeds, poor drainage or overwatering. Remove established invasive weeds and correct water movement before covering the surface.
Match the material to the bed
Coarse arborist chips and bark suit many shrub and tree beds and resist rapid compaction. Compost provides finer organic matter but can support weed germination if left as an exposed seedbed. Fine material on a windy slope may move or wash.
Use clean material from a known source. Avoid fresh contaminated waste, pieces of treated timber and material containing viable pest-plant fragments.
Apply an even layer, not a volcano
For established beds, a settled layer around 50–100 mm is commonly useful depending on material and plants. Keep it clear of trunks, stems and crowns. Deep piles against bark hold moisture, conceal damage and can encourage roots in the wrong place.
Water the soil before mulching if it is dry and confirm irrigation still reaches the root zone afterward. Top up when the layer has genuinely broken down rather than adding a new deep layer every year.
Use mulch as part of a weed plan
Mulch suppresses light-dependent seedlings but not every creeping or deep-rooted weed. Patrol edges and remove breakthroughs before they seed. Avoid disturbing the mulch unnecessarily, which brings buried seed back to the surface.
