What a Lawn in North Shore Is Actually Dealing With
Soil and grass
The Shore runs from sandstone and clay in the older suburbs to genuinely sandy ground near Takapuna, Milford and Campbells Bay. The sandy strip drains fast and dries out first in February; the clay behind it does the reverse. Kikuyu is strong on the coastal flats and thins out on the steeper shaded sections through Birkenhead and Northcote.
Through the year
Coastal warmth extends the growing season by a few weeks at each end compared with inland Auckland. Summer mowing is weekly on the flats. The dry stretch from mid-January is the one that shows, particularly on sandy lawns where the colour goes long before the grass is in trouble.
What catches people out
Salt wind is the local factor. It burns hedge foliage on the seaward side and pushes exposed lawns toward the coarser grasses that tolerate it. Steep drives and terraced back lawns on the older streets also decide which mower can be used, which is worth saying at quote time rather than discovering on the day.
How we work here
On the Shore the coastal flats and the steep inland sections are scheduled differently. Flat kikuyu lawns run weekly through summer; terraced sections take longer per visit and are quoted on time rather than area. Hedge work on the seaward side is timed to give new growth a chance to harden before the next stretch of salt wind.
